Swedish Match

Swedish Match is the largest manufacturer of Swedish Snus with a 95% market share. How they achieved that is a fascinating historical lesson. How they’ve maintained it is a tribute to quality and satisfying the customer’s desires.

In 1914 the Swedish Risdag (Parliament) desperately needed funds for the first pension reform program and for National Security (remember World War 1?). So they nationalized the entire tobacco industry and created a monopoly. Sweden now owned more than 105 brands of snus!

It wasn’t until 1967 that the Swedish monopoly on tobacco was finally dissolved. Svenska Tobaks AB took over the production of snus. Today, Svenska Tobaks AB is known as Swedish Match!

In their last annual report, snus made up about 43% of their total business. Swedish Match is also the largest cigar and pipe tobacco distributor in the world and of course, is a major player in the matches and lighters business (hence the name Swedish Match).

Swedish Match snus is made to very high proprietary standards: even higher than required by the Swedish Government. Their snus brands are numerous and include:

Catch, Ettan, General, Goteborgs Prima Fint, Goteborgs Rape, Grovsnus, Kardus, Kronan, Nick and Johnny, Onico, Piccanell Probe, Roda Lacket, Tre Anare, and until recently Vertigo, a snus marketed to woman, which has been discontinued. They also market the Prismaster tool to form loose snus into a pris’ or pinch for the user.

Each one of these brands come in a variety of forms, types, and flavors.
