1:AN Loose Snus – A tribute to Ettan Snus and its creator Jacob Fredrik Ljunglöf
no. 1 – Ettan Loose Snus Limited Release 2014
Ettan Snus is famous for a number of reasons. Created in 1822 by snus factory owner Jacob Fredrik Ljunglöf, Ettan is one of the oldest active brands of Swedish snus today.
Around 1830, Ljunglöf along with his friend JJ Berzilius (the father of modern chemistry) developed and began manufacturing Ettan snus using pasteurization instead of then-common fermentation. Ljunglöf concentrated on the enhanced tobacco flavor and high quality of Ettan.
Berzilius recognized pasteurization as a way of eliminating bacteria in the tobacco and significantly lowering TSNA levels. Today, practically all modern Swedish snus is pasteurized based on the principals of Ljunglöf and Berzilius.
Virtually all of the Swedish snus manufacturers in the 1800s rated their lineup of snus by quality with labels of No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3. Jacob Fredrik Ljunglöf boldly launched his 1st as a separate brand and was the first nationwide quality product. The Swedish word for 1 is ett, thus spawning the name Ettan.
1:an Loose Snus is a limited edition tribute to Ettan Snus by Swedish Match. Only 3000 cans were produced in the summer of 2014 and there will be no more; at least for 7 to 10 years.
For those of you who may be new to Swedish snus, Ettan loose snus has a strong tobacco flavor, clear hints of tar, dried grass and malt and slightly dark chocolate.
Ettan loose snus is easy to form into a prilla and provides a fast and strong flavor release.
Ettan is characterized by its clean, tobacco near taste and should have tasted the same way back in 1822. The recipe is simple with its mix of basic ingredients of tobacco, salt and water. Then as now, quality separates Ettan from the pack.
In 1990 Ettan Original portion snus was launched and in 2006, Swedish Match launched Ettan White portion.
Whatever version of Ettan Snus is to your liking, I would recommend grabbing a can of the 1:AN loose snus Limited Edition for your snus can collection…while it is still available.
Enjoy your snus!
