One of the things I find most annoying and offensive oft repeated by the Anti-All-Tobacco crowd is their insistence that if something contains tobacco, it's bad. One of the things I find most encouraging of late is that more and more Anti-Cigarette advocates are open to, and even embracing, Smokeless Tobacco as a positive alternative for the nicotine-addicted. The absolute least harmful smokeless tobacco product made today is Swedish Snus.
A cigarette smoker reduces their harm factor at least 98% by switching to Swedish/Scandinavian snus and is 99% more likely to stop smoking than someone using American Snus. American snus was specifically designed and marketed to be a complement to cigarettes...when you can't smoke, snus. Nicotine Gum and Patches have a documented 80% failure rate. Swedish snus is designed to be a cigarette replacement product and has done just that for countless former cigarette smokers; in Scandinavia and now the United States.
Andrew Romeo recently wrote a column 'Philip Morris says Snus will not Help Smokers Quit.' I'm not going to repeat it here but encourage you to read it if you have not done so already. He eviscerates the nature of the PMUSA-sponsored study, the quality of the study, and in doing so demonstrates how the Study was pre-destined to produce the results Philip Morris USA desired: that snus was a complimentary product; not a replacement for cigarettes.
In short, the PMUSA Study was designed to support their marketing strategy; not the facts. At least their motivation is transparent.
This article appeared in the March 1st 2008 edition of the Gotlands Allehanda.
The Swedish tobacco industry has been producing snuff in its present form since the 1800s and the industry has annual sales in the current situation billions. Today, the Swedish snus is in principle only for Swedes and Norwegians. Health hazards surrounding snuff are under constant debate, but researchers have long agreed that the risks of snus is substantially less than for smoking.
Strong Snus, Stark Snus, Sterk Snus: these are all Scandinavian snus's which are higher in nicotine than Regular snus. Until 2008, this almost always meant 11 mg/g. of nicotine instead of 8mg/g. of nicotine. Eight milligrams of nicotine is the equivalent of one cigarette absorbed orally instead of inhaled. The glaring exception was Skruf Stark which contained 14mg/g. of nicotine.
In 2008, a new snus category was introduced: the Extra Strong, Extra Stark, Ekstra Sterk high nicotine snus's.

EXCLUSIVE Breaking SNUS News!
It appears that the second of the Top Three US Tobacco Companies has been caught intentionally cutting nicotine levels in their snus products to keep their brand loyal cigarette smokers from being able to stop smoking and switch to snus exclusively...or even possibly use snus to quit tobacco altogether.
The first attempt was by Phillip Morris USA and Marlboro snus. The second appears to be the third largest American Tobacco Company, Lorillard Tobacco Company and Triumph Snus.
It's been almost 2 months since I wrote my first review of Swedish Snus. I've tasted A LOT of different snus's since then and am ready to present Part 2 of my Swedish Snus reviews. First, the standard disclaimer: taste is subjective. If I speak poorly of a particular brand and you really want to try it, go ahead...it may turn out to be your favorite. Conversely, you might not like one of my favorites. This is just my opinion and my taste.>
As to where to buy your Swedish Snus, my opinion remains unchanged: SnusCENTRAL.com If you're a first-time buyer, use the Discount Code and get 10% off your first purchase: fresh snus, order processed within 24 hours, great customer service: They aim to please. Now to the taste tests! I found some real surprises, some pleasant, some not, this go-around. I also re-affirmed my conclusion on the Offroad brand portion snus: it's horrible.....unless you've been using Camel SNUS,Marlboro snus, Skoal snus, Klondike snus, or any other American version of snus for any significant length of time.
If you're upgrading to Swedish Snus, you may find some taste too strong (because the American snus's taste is watered down and too sweet). Some people use Offroad as a bridge to the premium Swedish Snus brands. Others use Mini Portion Snus instead of Regular Portion Snus. Since most American Snus seems to be intentionally low nicotine to keep you smoking cigarettes, be aware that Swedish Strong Snus and Extra Strong snus has 2 1/2 to four times the nicotine you are accustom to.
The Offroad loose snus is supposed to taste much better, but I can't say from experience...for a future review.
If you're going directly from cigarettes to Swedish Snus, try a can of Offroad if you like but you can handle (and will love) Swedish Snus. With well over 100 different varieties to choose from, a little experimentation (with the help of our Snus Reviews Section and our Snus Forum), you'll quickly discover "your taste preference".
There is a lot of interest and unfortunately a lot of misinformation about Snus, especially in the United States. So many of you have questions! Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about Snus.....and the real answers.
