The calls for banning flavored nicotine-containing products has been primarily a long and vocal one when it comes to vapor and e-cigarettes.  Poking out of the eSmoke debate is a new threat that hits my community much closer to home:  a ban on flavored mint and wintergreen snus and smokeless tobacco.

San Francisco, Oakland, St. Paul, and Canton have proposed regulations to effectively slash the availability of all smokeless tobacco products and ban outright wintergreen and mint flavored dip and snus.  Since US sales of these flavors make up 60% of the total US market, this will be a huge blow to national Adult Tobacco Harm Reduction (ATHR) efforts to switch current cigarette smokers to safer nicotine alternatives.

"Medically approved" products like Big Pharma's nicotine gum are of course excluded in these new regulations.  New nicotine pouches and dissolvables which contain no tobacco like Swedish Match's new ZYN product have no such luck and fall under the proposed bans as well.

Brexit to the EU Snus Ban!

In a historic referendum on 23 June 2016, the UK voted to leave the European Union.  The ramifications of Brexit, both the good and the bad, have been the leading discussion topic in the UK, the EU, and around much of the world ever since.

As a Swedish Snus Ambassador, my first thought was "does this mean Swedish snus is (or will be) legal to purchase in the UK?".  Let's take a look at that.....

17 Nov 2014 - Breaking News:  Swedish Match AB, the world's largest manufacturer of Swedish Snus, will announce this morning that if the Swedish Parliament votes to raise the excise tax on snus, Swedish Match will be forced to respond in kind with price increases for all their their snus products.

If history is any indicator, it is likely other Swedish manufacturers of snus will also raise their prices...

Mr. Barrosa, tear down this Snus Ban!

Guten tag snusers,

Sharing snus at the Brandenburg GateI have just come back from a rather excellent trip to Berlin, the capital of Germany.  I go at least once a year as it is, quite simply, one of my favorite cities in the world.

It has always been one of my favorite places to visit.  History and culture aside, there is a vibe about Berlin that I have only felt in a very few cities in the world.

Berlin holds a special significance for me, I am of the generation that learnt about East and West Germany in school, a divided Germany, and then witnessed unification. I can still remember 9th November 1989 and watching the Berlin wall fall on TV.

I have been to Berlin whilst the wall was up and after it fell. The wall has always held a massive fascination for me; seeing two very different worlds, side by side, separated by a wall (and the death strips) was just mind blowing.

The graffiti on the wall always intrigued me.  It told so many stories, had so many messages for the oppressed people of the east, it always left a lasting impression on me.

I have made it a personal mission of mine to visit Berlin at least once a year for every year that I am on this earth. Every time I always manage to experience something new and every time it looks different...

The PACT Act: The Calm before the Storm

Larry WatersAs I write this, we are less than a week away from May 2010.  Swedish Snus users in America (or Amerika, as it has now become) are smiling, laughing, and enjoying our snus bravely.  Behind the frozen smiles, we frantically order mass quantities of our favorite snuses and discuss home snus making techniques before The PACT Act kicks in June 30th.  Or maybe it's July 1st.   Since the Presidential bill signing of PACT was kept so quiet, I'm really not sure when the 90 day period is over.

Meanwhile, FDA keeps making the rules up as they go concerning The Tobacco Act.  Uncertainty prevails.  While some huge Swedish Snus manufacturers seem paralyzed by lawyers and indecision, sleeping giants are awakening and may stomp into the US Market as early as this year or 2011.

The Nanny States of America; Part One

Welcome to the United Nanny States of America: One nation, under the tobacco ban, divisible by the government, with liberty and justice for some, definitely not all.

When our Founding Fathers created the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, it was the freedom from a tyrannical government in which was the ultimate Nanny State.  Taxation without representation, laws enacted to protectTaxation-without-Representation government control over the people.  Our Founding Fathers, risked their own lives, fortunes, liberty, and freedom.  They fought to free us from such oppression.

If they could see us now, could they – or would they – not be horrified to how far we’ve fallen away from their initial vision of this country’s potential?  In the words of Benjamin Martin (as portrayed by Mel Gibson) from The Patriot, ''Why should I trade a tyrant 3,000 miles away for 3,000 tyrants one mile away?''  Is this not what we’ve already done?

Tobacco, Guns, and Tyranny

The Constitution is based on natural law – the people’s right to govern themselves, to the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness granted to all American citizens.  Your right to swing your fist ends where my face begins, right?  If this is so, then why are my rights as an adult legal tobacco user being taken away?

CAMEL White Portion Snus NOT De-listed!!!

CAMEL White Portion by JTI NOT Discontinued!

Rumors have been circulating in the Snus Community that JTI Sweden, makers of Swedish CAMEL Original Portion Snus and CAMEL White Portion Snus were about to or had already de-listed the CAMEL White Portion.  After much investigation, the SnusCIA has determined these rumors are completely false.

The following give the latest status on the current Congressional efforts to prohibit ALL Internet, Telephone, or Mail-Order delivery of Cigarettes and all Smokeless Tobacco Products including Snus to consumers within the United States of America.  Cigars are of course, exempt.

Back oInternet ban on tobacco sales and more...n September 26th, 2008, I wrote a brilliant article on what came to be known as the PACT Act.  This article, entitled Cigarettes, Snus, ALL Tobacco (except cigars):  Internet Purchases to be Banned in the United States?, focused on Rep. Weiner (D-NY) and his attempt to prohibit delivery of all tobacco products (except cigars) to American consumers.

The caveat was that IF the delivery driver could establish the recipient was of legal age (through a new free government database) AND ensure "all applicable State and Federal taxes were collected", then tobacco products could be delivered.

Opinion: The EU Snus Ban

The EU snus ban is an "Animal Farm" type of idiocy which languishes in the "WTF" category permanently.Anonymous EU Tobacco Guy Snus is nearly harmless. 16% of Swedes use it, and they all live to be 100 years old. The endless debates among Brussels, Karolinska, and Swedish Match are tiresome, and BAT, JTI, and PMI now all have snus through recent acquisitions. What's the 'political' reason? People used to say PMI, but they're now in it. Big Pharma? Possibly.

How about lack of interest?

I used to work for Big Tobacco in Sweden, among other places. Snus had its 15 minutes internationally a few years ago, but frankly, European tobacco consumers by and large have no idea what it is, and if it showed up in shops, would either not see it (due to local display/ad bans) or ignore it.
