Swedish Match believes that tobacco regulation will continuously become more global in character and steadily increase in scope...
One of the best kept secrets in America yesterday was that President Obama; our Smoker-in-Chief, had signed the infamous PACT Act; Prevent All Cigarette Trafficking Act, into law. Convenience Store news broke the story as best I can tell.
Google searches this morning revealed practically nothing. There was a press release on ReadMEDIA.com with some ancillary articles praising the New York Congressional delegation for forcing PACT onto America tobacco users and bludgeoning that uppity Seneca Nation in the process. New York State hates the Seneca Nation and has lusted for their casino and tobacco money for decades. I guess buying Manhattan for $26 in beads wasn't good enough for New York.
The rest were blog posts basically repeating that PACT was now law, quotes from the legislation, and more obligatory mentions of "the children".
The Pact Act passed the House of Representatives earlier today by a vote of 327 to 25. Big Media Response? Jim Abrams of the Associated Press opened his article with "Congress has moved to stamp out a multibillion-dollar tobacco trafficking industry that has enriched criminals and terrorists and made it easier for kids to buy cigarettes online.". His article goes down-hill from there repeating the propoganda and false claims of terrorism and smuggling Rep. Weiner based H.R.1676; The PACT or as Weiner cynically called it, the Prevent all Cigarette Trafficking Act.
Any rational person reading the Kennedy/Waxman legislation President Obama recently signed into law would be aghast at how poorly written it was. The so-called Family Smoking Protection and Tobacco Control Act accomplishes neither.
It is no secret that Black Americans who smoke are overwhelming menthol cigarette smokers. By keeping menthol legal as a flavoring for cigarettes, FDA is not only mandated to save Lorillard Tobacco and Newport Cigarettes from extinction, but to condemn more Black Children to cigarette addiction.
The joke may be on Lorillard though, as Altria Group's Philip Morris USA; yes the same Philip Morris USA whose lobbyists wrote a large piece of Kennedy/Waxman, introduced a brand-new Marlboro menthol cigarette just days before President Obama signed the bill into law. This cigarette is specifically targeted against Newport and Reynolds Tobacco's Camel Crush.
Nonsmoking Nation is not a blog name you would associate with tobacco friendly nor should you. Her article, "Tobacco Regulation: A Deal with the Devil?" is an ominous look at current tobacco control legislation from the anti-tobacco side.
Mr. UNZ felt compelled to respond (of course) but the articles matter-of-fact discussion of FDA regulating the amount of nicotine which can be in a tobacco product is chilling. This article is a reality-check for all Scandinavian Snus lovers who are ignoring current US legislation as they believe it only affects cigarettes.....which we all quit when we took up real snus.
Current "tobacco control" legislation including regulation by FDA is something snus users in the United States can't afford to ignore any longer. It's becoming time for us to make our voices heard.
