The best of intentions carry unintended consequences. In the case of The Tobacco Act of 2009 giving FDA control over tobacco products, the intentions weren't even praise-worthy. The Tobacco Act was pure political pandering to both Anti-Tobacco Zealots and Big Tobacco at the same time. As usual, "the children" were mentioned often. The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, as it was called up until about 20 minutes after President Obama signed it into law, is now just called The Tobacco Act. No need to hide behind the family or children once the Big Guy made this travesty the law of the land.
"Unintended Consequences" were big on the mind of Bill Greiwe, CEO of Cheyenne International, when we spoke a little over a month ago. Much has happened in the short time between then and now which makes Mr. Greiwe's thoughts more prophetic than speculative.
Back on November 21st, I advanced the argument that while we were all so concerned about the impact of S.1147, The PACT Act of 2009 legislation, we were ignoring the larger threat: FDA Tobacco Czar Lawrence Deyton's interpretation of The Tobacco Act and how that translated into real danger for Swedish Snus in America. I opened the article, The PACT Act will Hurt, but FDA could Kill Snus Users, with the announcement by FDA that they were soliciting Public input on what they now call The Tobacco Act. I guess even FDA couldn't stomach calling it the 'Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act' any longer....or maybe it's a reduction of paperwork thing.
If by some slim chance, you haven't read that article yet, do so now. It foreshadows the taste and flavoring tampering FDA seems to have planned for smokeless tobacco including snus sold in the United States. As ugly as the picture was that I painted using FDA and Dr. Deyton's own words, the situation has deteriorated even further with the release of more "clarifications" by FDA; in particular Modified Risk Tobacco Products (MRTP).
Here is a great example of how Big Tobacco loves the Press. Though this one was a bit obvious, keen observers should begin watching for more articles like this. It's like the old art of "Kremlinology." Read between the lines, and watch where the leaders are standing on the podium.
Here's one about how tobacco companies' 'high hopes' of helping smokers quit with snus may be dashed due to the results of an 'authoratative' study.
In this morning's Richmond (Virginia) Times-Dispatch, there is an article by David Ress called "Study: New products may not curb smokers' cravings."
It is quite clear that US Big Tobacco is interested in keeping smokers hooked on cigarettes. I have discussed this in a previous article. In a nutshell: They want you to smoke, but also are offering snus products for when you can't due to local laws, restrictions, or out of consideration for others. "Your cigarettes may get jealous" according to Camel SNUS's website.
Now, with the FDA on board, and snus poised to be submitted under the 'Reduced Exposure' categorization, what a great time for a paper in PM's hometown to say snus is already a failure in that category? Why? Smokers can only be satisfied by smoking!
One of the news feeds we have coming in to SnusCENTRAL.org is from TobaccoToday.info. I find the site valuable for a number of reasons.
In this case, it's the reader comments of this story "Professor: Tobacco Free Kids will Kill Millions".
The blog piece is a conversation starter. The real story is in the reader comments. While my personal comments are brilliant and entertaining/scathing as you've come to expect, those from Bill Godshall are just loaded with facts and links concerning S. 982 and tobacco regulation by FDA in general.
I encourage all rational people who understand the positive role Reduced Harm Tobacco products can play in American Society to read Bill's comments. Take the action he recommends too.

When is CAMEL Snus NOT Camel SNUS? When Camel Snus is made in Sweden by Japan Tobacco International (JTI); not by R.J. Reynolds in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
SnusCENTRAL.org, the most comprehensive snus website on the planet, revealed today that two high-ranking Swedish Match AB Officials have accepted sanctuary at the SnusCENTRAL Command Bunker which is located at an undisclosed location somewhere in the United States. Swedish Match AB is the largest manufacturer of Swedish Snus in the world as well as being an industry leader in the manufacturing and distribution of cigars, American smokeless tobacco, pipe tobacco, and matches/lights.
As Camel SNUS and Marlboro snus's own official FAQ's demonstrated in my Three Part Series: Camel SNUS and Marlboro snus: US Cigarette Smokers lack of knowledge about REAL Snus being Exploited by Big Tobacco for BIG Profits, there is a lot of misinformation on what snus is, who makes what, and a whole bunch of other related items.
But it's not just Reynolds America and Altria who are taking advantage of American Cigarette Smokers lack of knowledge concerning Swedish Snus: The internet is just loaded with rumors, half-truths, and plain fiction.
