You will never see published a letter from a cigarette smoker thanking Altria or Reynolds American for addicting them to nicotine through cigarettes. Likewise, a short note saying "I'm a life-long smoker. So happy today to learn I have lung cancer!" is even more unlikely.
In the case of nicotine-addicts now cigarette-free because of Swedish snus, thank you letters and testimonials are more the rule than the exception.....
No and Yes.
One thing must remain clear. Big Tobacco wants its legal consumers to smoke as many cigarettes as possible. The bulk of their marketing, where it is allowed around the world, is dedicated to "YAS," Young Adult Smokers, who 'party smoke' when they go out, or have a few drinks. The marketing emphasizes night-life and independence, blah-blah-blah.
Yet, "party-smoking" is going the way of the dodo all over Europe and North America. So are many other opportunities to smoke. Bars, restaurants, workplaces, one's own home if there are children or a hostile co-habitant. Hell, the Poles tried to ban smoking in parks and at bus stops.
Some eating and drinking institutions manage to develop outdoor seating alternatives for smokers. Sweden and Norway almost totally reversed the effect of their bans by making their summer seating year-round with huge heat-lamps and blankets. One bar in Ireland, it was said, removed it's roof so that patrons could smoke 'in' the bar.
The United States Economy is crumbling. Unemployment is now projected to reach 8% in 2009: Translation; it will be a lot higher than 8%. Millions of Americans are out of work, losing their medical benefits, their homes, and those still with jobs live in constant well-founded fear that their jobs will be the next ones to be eliminated. America is not in Recession: We are already suffering the Second Great Depression. The stakes? America itself and the World economy by extension.
None of that is important enough to capture the attention of myopic Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA). In the midst of America's worst economic crisis in 90 years, Waxman is laser-focused on his own personal agenda. He has already resurrected his 2008 attempt to place all tobacco products under FDA Control.
