Swedish Snus Ambassador to the United States

Snus News from Denmark

V2 Tobacco announced today that Thunder Berry Extra Strong Portion Snus has been discontinued effective immediately.  Disappointing sales numbers are behind the Thunder Berry delisting.

If you are a Thunder Berry fan, run to your favorite snus store while you can.  Once they're out of stock, Thunder Berry ES Snus will vanish into snus history.

On a happier note, V2 Über Director Patrick Vogel revealed the upcoming launch of Thunder Raspberry Extra Strong Portion Snus.

Back in August 2013, V2 released the very first Raspberry flavored snus, the very high nicotine Thunder Ultra Raspberry Portion Snus.  At 22mg/g nicotine, the Thunder Ultra Strong snus series is among the strongest snus currently on the planet.......

Today, FDA announced it was authorizing the sale and marketing of eight Swedish Match smokeless tobacco products in the US.

These first eight are not in the snus category but their approval would seem to indicate that all Swedish Match snus falling within the qualifying date range should easily win approval.

Swedish Match as of last month had 195 product applications on file with FDA.

FDA's traditional "safe and effective" standard for evaluating medical products does not apply to tobacco. Instead, FDA regulates tobacco products based on a public health standard intended to reduce the toll that tobacco use causes.

To legally market a new tobacco product in the United States, a manufacturer must receive a written order from FDA permitting the marketing of the new tobacco product under one of three pathways. These three pathways are:

Snus loving nicotine addicts around the world love this time of year.

Week 36 through Week 42 is when Swedish snus manufacturers traditionally begin launching their new snus releases for the remainder of the year. This year they will be joined by Reynolds American with the release of Camel SNUS Frost Large Portion on September 2nd.

Six years ago, Camel SNUS Frost; the Reynolds American version of a mint flavored dry mini portion snus, put snus onto the radar screens of both American tobacco users and Swedish snus manufacturers. It was not the first time Reynolds had marketed American-style SNUS and even for a brief trial period in 2006, Swedish-made Camel SNUS.

Camel Frost was the breakout SNUS product which captured public attention and forever changed snus flavoring on both sides of the Atlantic.

Finally, my Snus Review of Captain Yankee Xtra Strong Americana Snus

Captain Yankee; the extra strong Americana snus by Nick and Johnny, fights for the snus oppressed in Norway!I've been asked why I'm so obsessed with Captain Yankee; this is the third article I've written about it and the official release date isn't until next week.

In large part, my fascination has to do with the strong American-style branding designed for the Norwegian market and the somewhat unimaginable flavor profile.

When we published the second article; Captain Yankee Xtra Strong Americana Portion Snus: the new Nick and Johnny snus for Norway, the only flavor description we could squeeze out of Swedish Match was "a new extreme snus inspired by American flavors with a distinct taste of cherry, wintergreen and cinnamon."

Captain Yankee Americana X-Strong Snus: a new snus for Norway

If you're an American snus user, don't look for Captain Yankee X-Strong Americana Snus by Nick and Johnny in the local tobacco or convenience store...unless you are visiting Norway. While Captain Yankee will be available world-wide (where legal) through internet snus stores like the incompareable Snus Shop, its primary market is Norway.

Captain Yankee snus by Nick and Johnny is made for Norway snusersCaptain Yankee Americana is as American a name for a snus as you could design without beating someone over the head with a bald eagle. It comes in a cool but decidedly American themed can.

The flavor profile couldn't be more American; Swedish Match describes it as a new extreme snus inspired by American flavors with a distinct taste of cherry, wintergreen and cinnamon. If this snus were any more American, you would have to salute the can before opening it!

After all this sinks in, you may be asking yourself why was Captain Yankee X-Strong Americana snus designed for.... Norway? Why didn't Swedish Match slap the General brand name on it and offer Captain Yankee over the counter in the USA?

EXCLUSIVE: A SnusCIA agent stationed at Moscow Airport sent us hidden documents on the latest trademarks submitted by Swedish Match AB.

They reveal some interesting new logos and graphics for existing Swedish Match products but the most explosive news is that a new Nick and Johnny snus is pending: Meet Nick and Johnny Captain Yankee Xtra Strong Americana Portion Snus.

Nick and Johnny Captain Yankee Xtra Strong Americana Portion Snus

Nick and Johnny Captain Yankee Trademark Application

The Nick and Johnny Snus Brand was designed for the Norwegian market where it is the 4th top selling brand. Fortunately for nicotine-loving Americans, snusers in Norway really like strong and extra strong snuses; much more so than Swedes. I'd go as far as saying that without Norway, Swedish snus would still probably top out around 11mg/gram nicotine.

Thus Swedish Match is realizing an added bonus in that Nick and Johnny also has an enthusiastic following within the United States. This is the first Nick and Johnny snus specifically and openly targeting American snusers. The flavor profile will come as a bit of a shock compared to the rest of the N&J line.

Beyond that, I really can't say anything more about Captain Yankee snus.....until Week 32. I'll be back then to tell you everything you could possibly want to know about Captain Yankee Xtra Strong Americana portion snus by Nick and Johnny. You'll want to hear it; Captain Yankee is much more than just a new snus.

The Swedish Match Lab Series gets a make-over The Swedish Match Lab Series was also originally designed for the Norwegian snus market but found fans in the US as well.

It appears the Lab Series branding is getting a makeover later in 2013.

I'm speculating here but I doubt SMAB would market Lab Series and The Lab as two seperate brands symultaniously.

I'm sure Swedish Match wanted my input on the new branding but I was probably pool-side when they called.

More Swedish Match New Graphics and Logos

New for late 2013 is a new graphic scale of nicotine strength, which pays omag to Imperial Tobacco's Skruf snus strength indicators except the Swedish Match versions are longer, bolder, and more powerful looking. In your face, skruf AB!

How this new scale is read depends on what Swedish Match defines as the strength of the single bar.

If it indicates low nicotine as in < 8mg/gram, we would have Low; two bars indicating 8-9mg/gram Regular; three bars indicating 11-14mg Strong/Sterk, and four bars indicating 16 mg/gram and up as Extra Strong/Xtra Strong/Ekstra Stark

The Slim Fit icon looks like something you would see on a Lab Series can but not necessarily on a can of stylized "The Lab". Like the new Strength indicators, Slim Fit could also apply to a number of Swedish Match snuses including Long portions. Like you, I have no idea at present but it's fun to speculate.

Other new logo graphics 2013 trademarked by SMNA

The rest of the SMNA trademark application contains logo-types; some new and some already in use.

Not that anyone in the US would know this first hand because of the stupid FDA, but the current General Onyx Black Portion Snus catch lid displays the white shield with black "G" logo.

Enjoy your snus summer! If Captain Yankee is any indication, Swedish snus lovers are going to be in for a wild ride starting this fall.

Nick and Johnny Captain Yankee Xtra Strong Americana portion snus will of course be available at the famous Snus Shop starting on [REDACTED until Week 32]

WEEK 32 UPDATE:  Here is the Full Story on Captain Yankee...

EU Snus Ban Remains, e-cigarettes to be Regulated as Medicines. Menthol banned, Slim Cigarettes Banned....and it gets worse

The Evil EU EmpireThe EU Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) July 10th 2013 vote on the next EU Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) ended in disaster for Reduced Harm advocates.

The fight is not over but the future of  Swedish snus and e-cigarettes are now very much in doubt.

The Swedish Exemption on Snus remains.  While an exemption for snus from upcoming EU flavoring bans was approved, an exemption on an ingredients ban was voted down thanks to UK MEP Linda McAvan.

Sweden seemed to believe it had support from McAvan to get an ingredients exemption which would continue to allow baking soda (fondly known as E500) to be used in Swedish snus.

Why should snusers care about a little baking soda in their snus?  Without E500, one cannot extract nicotine from snus.

Maria Larsson's poor stategy of trading the Swedish snus ban for flavoring protection, a weak and myopic negotiating point to begin with, has driven Swedish snus to the very edge of snus disaster.

FDA Tobacco Czar Mitch Zeller: Swedish Snus Friend or Foe? FDA Tobacco Czar Mitch Zeller, Ruler of the FDA Center for Tobacco Products (CTP), has announced the first tobacco products to move through the long-awaited substantial equivalence (SE) process. Two new cigarettes from Lorillard, Newport Non-Menthol Gold Box 100s and Newport Non-Menthol Gold Box, were found by FDA to be substantially equivalent to predicate products and blessed with approvals. Four other unknown tobacco products were denied and put to the sword.

Of the 4000 tobacco products submitted to FDA for SE approval, all but about 500 are currently on the market in a provisional awaiting review status. Understandably, the manufacturers of those provisional products are rather anxious how they will fare when under review.

It would be helpful if FDA could have at least released the types of tobacco products rejected if not their manufacturers as well. That's probably why Congress forbid FDA from publicly sharing any information on rejected SE applications.

Swedish snus; particularly those introduced in the US after the enactment of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act of 2009, have pending substantial equivalence applications. Swedish Match does have an advantage as a number of their snuses were grandfathered since they were available prior to the Tobacco Control Act cut-off.

If Lorillard's two new cigarettes were approved on the basis that they are equally (but not more) dangerous than their pre-Tobacco Control Act predecessors, logically the same would hold true for the extremely less harmful than cigarettes Swedish Match snuses created both before and after Tobacco Control Act took effect .

By not being able to tell us even what category of tobacco products the four rejected products fell under, Swedish snus and other reduced risk tobacco products continue to circle in a rather frustrating FDA holding pattern in the US.

Mitch Zeller: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Appointed in March 2013 as Tobacco Czar after the rather hasty departure of Dr. Lawrence 'Bopper' Deyton, Zeller has kept the tobacco community walking on egg shells.
