Swedish Match's Q1 tops forecast, snuff disappoints

Obtained from public sources:  29 Apr. 09

Not great news but not unexpected due to the market volatility surrounding the US tobacco tax increases.  Highlights even more that mass cigarette smoker education is both the key to reduced harm snus expansion and the challenge in the United States.

Swedish Match is the largest manufacturer of Swedish Snus in the world with a 95% market share in Sweden.  Snus Brands include General, Götborgs, Probe, Ettan, Nick and Johnny, Kronan, Röda Lacket, Grovsnus, Kardus, Catch, and Tre Ankare.

  1. Certainly not good news for SM. Though there is no information about volumes or revenues here, it must be a result of continued downtrading in the US market. The recession is forcing snuff (dip) users down to Timberwolf, and the actions of Reynolds (free Camel snus to the Trade) have reduced the overall US profit pool for snus to zero.
  2. My mistake if I'm wrong, but the article didn't mention anything about snus, just snuff. It's no secret that SM's Red Man line of dip (cans) has been a HUGE disappointment here in the States, which is where the loss is coming from most likely. I wouldn't be so quick to blame the snus.

Also, though the losses are there, the pre-tax profits are almost double what they were last year. Think about that- sales are double what they were last year but you're bringing home less profits? Thank you big, greedy government.
