Reading through the Latest Snus News today, I came across an article by VJ Sleight on The Examiner.com entitled The
difference between Swedish snus and snus sold in the United States. Being the Leading Expert on Swedish Snus in the United States, I felt obligated to read it....plus it gives me the opportunity to call myself the Leading Expert on Swedish Snus in the United States.
If you're not familiar with Examiner.com, it's an interesting variation on the Citizen Journalism model. CJ is a somewhat new phenomenon in the United States but incredibly popular world wide. It's root is the premise that the mainstream media is not free but merely a propaganda outlet of the Government. It predates the Internet and during the Cold War, was especially popular (and dangerous) in the Soviet Union, the Eastern Bloc, and Communist China. It still exists in China and many other totalitarian regimes.....you just don't hear about it very often outside of the country. It is also a hugely popular form of entertainment in India where it seems everyone is a Citizen Journalist!
In the United States, sites like Ground Report or Neaju.com are good examples. Americans, it seems, are beginning to wonder a little if the mainstream American Media in a post-Cronkite age is truly impartial. Imagine that.
Examiner.com twists that a little. The first time I read it, I didn't even realize it was a CJ site until I poked around a little. I thought it was the web version of a traditional newspaper.
Since The Examiner describes their writers as "passionate", I either expected a glowing article on Swedish Snus or one bashing all snus. I got neither.
It was a straight forward, matter-of-fact piece simply putting out the facts. While the facts were not overtly twisted as is the case with so many articles, to slam all tobacco products, I was concerned with the way her bullet points on Swedish Snus were presented; focusing on non-tobacco user statistics in an article concerning tobacco use.
I'm not aware of any sane person recommending non-tobacco users take up any kind of snus. I know the American tobacco industry is marketing that way but I did say any sane person.
I'll let you read Ms. Sleights article and my response on The Examiner by CLICKING HERE. Maybe I'm just hyper-sensitive to perceived nuances in any article having to do with Swedish Snus. You decide and let me know. I have to open another can of excellent Swedish Snus.
Sincerely,
Mr. UNZ

Nice response. Maybe she will educate herself and publish another article.

She needs to research ALL articles on snus rather than what the Anti-Tobacco advocates put out there prior to publishing an article that would bash a much safer way to enjoy tobacco than what the U.S. currently offers.
As for the "Same Gun, Smaller Bullet" comment, it's like saying that all cars will go at the same top speed because they all have engines. I'm sure Porsche and Lamborgini will agree!
The last thing I will say about her article is this, the last time I checked, America was still a free country. Rather than trying to make American stop smoking with drugs and ineffective NRT's, VJ needs to seek out places SnusCENTRAL.org and realise that people are quitting smoking using Swedish Snus rather than poisioning themselves with prescription drugs and lining the pockets of another cancerous plague on the American people, Big Drug Companies! [end rant}

Welcome to SnusCENTRAL.org! Thanks for dropping by and commenting!..........
I see you have some points you don't feel you made in your article which you would like to share with us. As your host, let me address them as you wrote them..........
Let me be perfectly clear--I DO NOT advocate the use of ANY tobacco product. [[ VERY clear. Also clear in your bio. Not as clear in your article, but I did applaud your seeming unbiased reporting. ]] The studies done in Sweden have been challenged by Health Officals and maybe inaccurate. [[ Hmmm. Must fault you on your research here I'm afraid. I'm a BIG believer in The Truth, regardless of where the chips may fall. WHICH Studies done in Sweden have been challenged by SPECIFICALLY WHICH "Health Officials and MAYBE inaccurate? ]] The tobacco companies of the U.S. are not to be trusted when marketing their products, since there is no regulation of tobacco products in the U.S. [[ Absolutely CORRECT! Unfortunately, you were just talking about SWEDISH SNUS and ran that into BIG AMERICAN TOBACCO. Lets stick with SWEDISH SNUS for now, if you don't mind. ]]
We simply do not know exactly to what extent the use of snus will affect the user's health in the long run. [[ Swedish Snus has been around for well over 200 years. Swedish Snus has been regulated by the Swedish Government as a FOOD PRODUCT since 1970...almost 30 years ago. We DO know exactly to what extent (extraneous genetic anomalies aside) Swedish Snus will affect the user's health in the long run....That's why the Swedish version of our FDA and the Swedish Government REMOVED the cancer warning from Swedish Snus. ]] Any use of tobacco can be harmful since it contains carcinogins. [[ HOT DOGS contain TSNA's. Grill meat in general contain TSNA's. Do you advocate the Ban of Summer Barbecuing Too? I didn't notice www.StopGrillingStayVegan on your bio (sorry, cheap shot. Going for a little comic relief. Are you laughing?) ]] The level of nicotine is similar to cigarettes and can affect the cardiovascular system. [[ TRUE superficially, but I think everyone is in agreement nicotine is not something you recommend to a friend. And I believe both you and I stated that previously. ]] To say that Swedish snus is less harmful than cigarettes is just another way of saying that it is less lethal--point is that is still may be lethal. [[Still MAY be lethal? Depends how you define lethal to a grilled hot dog lover, a trans-fatty acid dripping bag of potato chips fan, and ESPECIALLY to nicotine-addicted cigarette smokers (Of which I once was and you obviously never were, hence your lack of understanding and compassion for the "victims" of the US Governments failure to ban cigarettes in 1964) ]] Same gun, smaller bullet. [[ For a nicotine-addicted cigarette smoker who can't or chooses not to cease using tobacco, SWEDISH Snus is a solution with 98% LESS risk than cigarettes. The other 2% is nicotine. You see the tobacco glass 2% full. Me, when I went from 30 years at 2 packs a day of cigarettes to NO cigarettes; just SWEDISH Snus 2 years ago, I saw the glass as 98% EMPTY...and without the physical and mental trauma nicotine addicts go through when trying to quit...over and over again. ]] For free quitting tips visit: www.StopSmokingStayQuit.blogspot.com. Good for you! Did you know a number of Doctors are using Swedish Snus to help those who do want to quit? Google Dr. Brad Radu. Big advocate of this for years. I'll leave a .pdf of one of his earlier articles although still two years more recent than the report you sourced, at the end of my painfully long response. Maybe it will give you some ideas for your smoking cessation business? Since Swedish Snus runs from high nicotine down to nicotine-free, many smokers wishing to quit have more success with Swedish Snus than they do with patches or gum. I hope everyone who can and wants to stop using tobacco does. For those who can't or simply don't want to, Swedish Snus is a win for them, a win for non-smokers, a win for the Government who can tax snus instead of cigarettes once they ban cigarettes without bankrupting the US more than it already is, and just an all around American way of dealing with a problem. Too bad Big American Tobacco chose another route of which I have written mountains about and I'm sure you oppose as much as I. ]]........
Glad I could clear that up for you. Don't want another "lesions" issue (inside joke between VJ and myself). Thanks for visiting and don't be a stranger. We have more in common than you care to admit..at least, factually.......
Sincerely,
Mr. UNZ...............http://www.capitalresearch.org/pubs/pdf/07_04_OT.pdf
