New Snuser from Florida 1 Year, 9 Months ago Karma: 0
Hello everyone I'm Steve and A snus noobie

I'm now back to A pack a day smoker after relapsing last September. I was A 2 pack A day smoker for 38 yrs and am now 52. Tried quiting 2 yrs ago due to my wifes serious medical condition as she can no longer smoke or drink and was on morphine for 28 days in the hospital and another month in a specialized rehab where they brain washed her from smoking. So I neede to quit and started with the patch and was doing great until the step down part which was pure torture,But made it 3 mo. and then slipped and smoked a few and threw out the pack and grabed the lozenges about 2 weeks later same thing happend. Went to chantix again pure torture and almost went out of my mind but lasted the 3 months on it and 4 days after stopping smoked like 2 packs and threw more out. Went to wellbutrin feeling druged all the time and feeling like I was going insane but lasted 3 mo. Same thing smoked again. Man!!! I can't tell you how many almost full packs of smokes I threw out during the course of the year tring to quit. I found out one thing through that year... You can't be forced to quit so I went back and figured when and if I'm ready if ever I will and my wife will just have to put up with me smoking and me stinking... Man!! That has been A struggle.... Never new I stunk that bad until I quit...
Any way then I found snus.

I was at my cousin's house 3 weeks ago and and his son who was A smoker had put something in his lip and thought nothing of it as me and my cousin went out to smoke. Well he came out 5 min later and I noticed he wasn't smoking and asked if he quit. He told me all about swedish snus and how he has been doing it since christmas and has now been quit for 4 mo. He gave me A can of Nick and Johnny strong and said try it if you like it fine if not then you don't. I came home with the can and put it in the fridge and there it stayed until I researched it on the web. I ran into snubie.com and read up on everthing chad had to say and then saw his links to this forum and read more and more. I decided after 3 days I will give this snus a try and popped in A Nick and Johnny and thought well at least it doesn't suck and as the next 3 days went on I found I was liking it more and more and wasn't really waiting for that next cig as much when I had 1 in. So I placed an order for 10 mixed cans to try and am really enjoying snus and am smoking less. I didn't really go into this to quit smoking but hey if it happens cool and I now find myself wanting to snus more than smoke.
Glad I found snus and now this forum.....

That's the money quote and the key. Lots of us have been right where you are. We are now ex smokers. As your taste buds and sense of smell return you will find all the subtle flavors in snus. Don't stress about quitting the smokes. It will just happen.

Welcome to SnusCentral.

I went in to it not really trying or wanting to quit smoking either.

But the snus eventually wins out. Saturday will be 6 weeks without the smokes for me.

Congrats, and don't be a stranger.

jagmanss - i am a snewbie too. welcome. i'm with hwagner - the snus does take over eventually. while i haven't quite kicked the sticks yet - progress is being made. i went from 15 - 20 down to around 3 a day. i had 5 beers last night playing poker and that would have had me smoking half a pack right there - but i didn't have one. all snus throughout. couple of guys would leave the table to burn one and when they came back in they smelled awful to me. All good signs. the tide is turning - go one craving at a time, when you are thinking about a cig, contemplate whether a portion will do ... sometimes the cig wins, but more often than not you will find a portion wins - one, because it curbs the nic craving and two, because they taste so damn good. but i also think we forget how terrible a cig does taste, beyond the one or two that might taste good w/coffee or whiskey, post-coital . i think this is the main reason most on this site are so devoted to snus - it has been their(my) savior in our battle against what we once thought was unbeatable. sorry so long winded.

good luck!

Welcome to SC Steve! Given enough time the snus will win out. I've been smoke free, with the exception of a couple of camping trips, and the occasional cigar, since April 2nd so nearly 4 months.

I actually tried to quit with snus, and in retrospect that might have made it harder. But after the first week it got a lot easier for me.

It doesn't matter how you cut it, it seems like the snus always wins out in the end

Thanks for the welcome everyone... Yeah when I first heard of snus i thought well!! Just another quit smoking gimick and then I read..read..read on this forum and popping in portions of N&J and then thought no it's not and then ordered. Since going back to smoking 10 mo. ago I found out that i cough more now than i did 2 yrs ago smoking and more phlem, more wheezing, I snore more and these damn new fire safe ciggs won't stay lit and make you huff on them faster and swear that the chemical they use for this is causing all these symptoms. Besides I can't stand that I reek of smoke and didn't know until I quit, I'm not the comfortable smoker I once was. But now snus has come into my new life.

I felt I needed to be cautious about my 1st order and took me a week because not only did I want to make sure I got what I thought might be good tasting and right for me. It also took me 7 of those 10 mo. back on smokes to get my wife to stop with the dramatics of holding her nose, making pew sounds, waving her hands and the like after coming in from outside or getting in the car after one and somewhat accept I smoke again as she doesn't anymore and hates the smell.

I told her at first about snus and got the chew/dip no your not thang... I told her it's not like that and gave some info.... anyway she seems more interested in it and keeps wanting to know if I have one in as she can't tell and last night said let me see it while I had one in and of course said no as it was all juiced up and slimy and don't need that ewwwwww!!!!! yuck!!!! comment. I aint stupid I might be a nicotine addict but not a dumb one..

Welcome to the site Steve. You're right about the fire safe cigarettes- they taste like garbage and make you cough a lot more than regular cigarettes. It's the chemicals, which are highly dangerous to inhale. The government did something that the cigarette companies weren't able to achieve since the 1950's- they made cigarettes even more dangerous than they already were!

wish I knew this before I went back to the ciggs 10 mo. ago but doubt it would have made a difference any way, it was either I go back or be in a mental ward at the time... Yeah, I hear alot of people who still smoke complaining these days about it and some have even resorted to those E-Ciggs because the new ciggs are giving them tthose symptoms... I have seen alot of people have them, But what I had gathered from them the cartridges aren't cheap and they break down or don't work when you need them most....

Wish I new about snus back then, But the important thing is I found it now..... and not lethal at that.... and no stick to walk around with... I'm good to go

Yeah man snus rules, and truly it will replace your cigarette habit very gently and with ease. I started using Camel "pseudosnus" as I was smoking (due to all of the free tin coupons at the time). At first I thought of it as a novel thing, but then I did some research and discovered the real true Swedish snus. Ever since I haven't so much as thought of a cigarette. Not entirely true, but any thought that came into my mind was laughed away when I dipped my tongue up to taste and remind myself of the snus I had in.
Although I must say, I don't know about snus causing most people to quit by surprise. I think you have to have some intention to quit smoking. When you have that intention and desire to quit, and snus comes into the picture, you get an easy way out, and quitting cigarettes become a breeze, we all know it is a trade of addictions, but it is a very good deal. I am at the point now where I am ready to start lowering my snus intake, to make it not a regular thing, but a truly enjoyable experience (abstinence makes for more enjoyment)
