Re:Sleep issues??? 2 Years, 10 Months ago Karma: 4
Yeah, I've gone through a variety of sleep patterns in my life. I've had the irritation of working at 6:30am for the last seven years, but had that balanced out for a while by taking a nap for a few hours in the afternoon so I could still stay up until 12 or 1am and have a life.

But that routine got shot to hell as soon as I had a kid, so I'm back to staying up too late, getting up too early, never sleeping enough and running on caffeine and nicotine. Another reason I'm finding snus to be perfect. It delivers a more sustained stimulant effect than cigs, but doesn't whack me out like a dozen cups of coffee.

Hi All:
I am attempting to quit smoking.
I drink massive amounts of coffee per day,
but that is due to my being on powerful pain meds for a spinal cord injury.
(No pity please, just explaining about the offset of Caffine vs Narcotics, and no, I don't have extra. sorry)
But as to Nicotine and Sleeping?
I never smoked while I slept, so I don't snus while I sleep.
Prior to injury, I could sleep 6-7 hrs without a smoke
so it only stands to reason I should be able to sleep without it now.
My only issues are pain/caffine disturbing my sleep.
Not whether or not I have Nicotine.
I love nicotine, but I can sleep without it.
(just my opinion...)

I don't snus while I sleep either bro, but my first week and a half on snus the sandman hated me.
He must work for RJ Reynolds. Guess it was just the "change" in nicotine levels...who knows. I do know it doesn't happen anymore, in fact I sleep better now than I have in 15 years, cuz I breathe better!

I fall asleep with a portion in now and then, it's not something I do daily. Sometimes I just forget I have it there. My lip feels funny if I don't have a snus in.
as for smoking in your sleep, I didn't either but most nights I would wake up and have a smoke and then go back to sleep. The first couple of weeks snussing I would actually wake up and grab a portion to push my nicotine levels back up, but I haven't done that for quite a while now.

I doze off occasionally with a snus in and usually don't notice until the wee hrs of the morn. Take it out and reflect on the tecchnocolor movies I'd had floating around in my mind. Then sit up and shriek,"OHMYGOD THAT WAS IN MY HEAD??? Then make a note to get app for counseling & meds and then go back to sleep. Its no big deal..Really!

It's funny that this thread popped up because I'm the kind of guy that falls asleep almost instantly whenever I hit the pillow. However in the last week after about a month or so of using Swedish snus out of nowhere I started having trouble getting to sleep at night. For about 3 or 4 nights straight it took me several hours to get to sleep! My thoughts were going non-stop and nothing I tried to focus on would overpower them.

I had not been using any stark snus during that time because my second order of starks had yet to come in at that point. I may have snused right up until bedtime on a few of those nights without realizing it but it has never caused a problem before. Like others have said, the only thing I can figure is that my daily intake has increased so maybe a nic overload is the culprit.

They found that almost half of the nicotine present in the pinch was extracted during snus use (37 % from portion-packed snus and 49 % from loose snus).
O

Thanks for the info but those numbers don't quite go together. Which is it? 10-20% or 37-49%? I think I'll stick with 30%.

The numbers go like this. 37-49% of the nicotine is extracted from the pouch but only 10-20% is actually passed through the mucous membrane into the circulatory system. Due to differences in pH levels because of manufacturing inconsistencies or your saliva's pH not all of the nicotine extracted is actually bioavailable. This is why they add salt, lemon, etc to the snus to try and adjust the pH to get the maximum absorption possible. The rest either gets swallowed (or spit if you thats how you roll) and excreted. That is assuming their numbers are correct of course... Hope that clears it up. a little.

I have started falling asleep with a portion in far too frequently lately. The bad parts of this are the occasional tobacco stains on my pillow, or the "phantom portions" that mysteriously disappear in the night (I have my theories on this though, lol). The upside, is that in the morning I don't "need" that ES hit first thing. I assume it's because of the increase in nicotine through the night, who knows.

I see this is an old thread. But I'm new so it's new to me. I found plenty of good information here for a new Snuser. All I can say is my whole life I have been an insomniac. I can honestly say for the short time I have been using Snus, I have had some of the best sleep I've had since I was a kid(I'm 39-been smoking cigs for 20 years). Snus has changed my life and am so grateful for it. I am eager to learn more and I love this forum at SnusCentral. Thank all of you for your experiences shared.
