Salty flavor? 1 Year, 5 Months ago Karma: 0
Hello,

New to Snus and trying to quit smoking. I'm in the US and tried Camel Frost and Mellow. It's way too sweet and artificial tasting.

I bought some Snus from Sweden and have mini portions.

I bought 9 different cans to try...damn the shipping cost more than the 9 cans.

Anyway, I smoked (still do some) menthol, so like those Snus flavors, but I also want a tobacco flavor as well.

I don't like the stuff with a citrus flavor to it and the other stuff is real salty to me.

Is there a tobacco flavor that doesn't taste salty? Is there any Swedish Snus that has a flavor close to an American dip (i.e. Skoal, copenhagen tobacco flavor)?

Welcome to SnusCentral. Congrats on trying to give up the smokes.

I was also a Menthol smoker, but I like all differents flavors of snus.

If you're looking for a more minty flavor, General Mint and Thunder Frosted are good.

As far as the salty taste. That's you lip telling you that snus isn't full of artificial flavorings. Seriously though, if you give it a week or so, you won't notice the salty taste any more.

Great tobacco flavors I would recommend Ettan. It's got a great smoky, earthy tobacco flavor.

Most Copenhagen users tend to favor Grov and Ettan, but they really don't taste very similar to Copenhagen. They just have a real robust taste that reminds you of fresh Cope.

Yes, if you've tried Camel snus first, then Swedish snus is extremely salty in comparison. But like hwagner said, the salt fades to the background after your first can or so. And like he also stated, the salt keeps the taste more of a pure tobacco flavor compared to American dip.

Snus doesn't have all the sugar, molasses, and artificial flavoring that dip has. (In fact, the only flavoring that Copenhagen shares with most snus is the smoked-food flavor additive, something Cope copied directly from Swedish Match.)

The new Offroad Long Cut styles have hardly any salt, though. They're closer to the Skoal Flavors lineup. If you like Wintergreen or Mint, try the new General WG/Mints.

Which "citrus" blends have you tried? Swedish brands with a "citrus" flavor have nothing in common with citrusy dip products. General snus and the like is characterized as having a "citrusy" taste but it's so far in the background that you won't even notice it.

My advice is to not even read the flavor descriptions for snus brands. They may keep you from trying a really great brand because one of the flavors is something you don't like. Snus is so subtle that unless the flavor is listed in the title of the brand (e.g. Probe Whiskey, General Mint, Jakobsson Icefruit. etc.), nine times out of ten the flavor can best be described as "tobacco".

Exceptions to this rule however is Goteborg's Rapé and Goteborg's Rapé #2, which are mildly sweetened with Juniper and Lingonberry. Roda Lacket is kind of fruity, and Gotland's Flader has a pure tobacco taste balanced with an apple flavor. Thunder Berry tastes kind of like cherry cough syrup, which I enjoy. These are all brands that have slightly less salt than the typical Swedish snus.

Welcome to the forum!

This may be the best advice Feck's ever given.

For 2 years I avoided any snus that had licorice/anise in the description, only to find a couple of them are pretty good. Our great, dear leader Larry had the same experience. I also found a few that I should like based on the flavor description that I hate. I dipped a can more or less of Cope a day for 15 years. I find my favorite snus are Ettan, Grov and General. None of which tastes like Cope, but all have similar primary tobacco flavor. I love Phantom Blue also but I think that's abnormal.

Feck hit the nail on the head! When I started out, I always bought the Bag O' Snus that Larry offers. Its the best way to try everything in my opinion.

It smells like chocolate to me in the can, and I get a chocolate flavor at first before the juniper comes through.

Anybody else, or am I crazy?

Oh well, maybe I'm crazy.

But next time you have it, see if it doesn't smell like chocolate.

Chocolate? Eh... I smell Windex, ammonia, juniper, and dirt, but no chocolate.

Thanks, Mick.

feck - I guess it's just me. When I first opened the can and took a sniff, the first thing I thought was chocolate. Not like a Hershey's type, but a rich, dark chocolate. Almost like a chocolate coffee.

But I'll stop now, I realize I'm all alone on this one.
