Schildt EB, Eriksson M, Hardell L, Magnuson A.
Oral snuff, smoking habits and alcohol consumption in relation to oral cancer in a Swedish case-control study.
Int J Cancer 1998 Jul 29; 77(3): 341-6.

The use of oral snuff is a widespread habit in Sweden. We investigated whether the use of Swedish moist snuff leads to an increasing risk of oral cancer. Other risk factors such as smoking tobacco and alcoholic beverages were also investigated. Our study comprised 410 patients with oral cancer, from the period 1980-1989, and 410 matched controls. All subjects received a mailed questionnaire. The response rates were 96% and 91% for cases and controls, respectively. In the study, a total of 20% of all subjects, cases and controls, were active or ex-snuff users. The univariate analysis did not show any increased risk [odds ratio (OR) 0.7, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.4-1.1] for active snuff users. We found an increased risk (OR 1.8, CI 1.1-2.7) for oral cancer among active smokers. Alcohol consumption showed the strongest risk for oral cancer. Among consumers of beer, an increased risk of 1.9 (CI 0.9-3.9) was found. Corresponding ORs for wine and liquor were 1.3 (CI 0.9-1.8) and 1.6 (CI 1.1-2.3), respectively. A dose-response effect was observed. Although not statistically significant, a multivariate analysis similarly suggested that the most important risk factors were beer and liquor consumption, followed by smoking.

Yeah, seeing studies that show snus doesn't contribute to an increased chance of mouth cancer are always great, but I was shocked and horrified to hear that beer does! Still, I'm not giving up my kegerator! No way!

Flipside of this is that apparently the high alcohol content of many mouth wash varieties, and the method and regularity of use... swishing it around a bunch every day... could be a pretty significant contributing factor.

And... since it's definitely more of a risk than snus... I suggest everyone pick up some "This Product may cause Mouth Cancer" stickers and perform the public service of sticking them on Listerine bottles at the store.

Fair's fair right? If snus has to be labeled as such in this country, then anything that carries more of a risk should definitely be labeled.

How did Listerine slip passed those eagle-eyed guardians of "the children" at FDA? Oh, that's right: mouth wash is Big Pharma and kids don't use it anyway.

Why have I NEVER heard about beer being linked to cancer until now? Why hasn't MADD been all over that?

Well I just read a study that Big Government causes cancer of the American Dream. Oh well, time for a beer. Better switch snus from Probe Whiskey Portion. I may get a hangover.

Yeah, I'm having a dark beer and some Ettan while I muse about how everyone is screaming about smokeless tobacco products being a risk for kids because they are too much like candy...

meanwhile I read study after study about how consumption of sugar is killing our country. It's both addictive and linked with a variety of diseases... obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and oh yeah... cancer!

Maybe parents should stop feeding their kids so much candy and junk food so the kids will stop trying to eat tobacco products in an attempt to get their sugar junkie fix!

We need more warning labels! We need more laws to protect us from ourselves! We need to dump more money into Government regulation and new laws because spending it on the education system might not only produce a society that doesn't need the laws and "protection", but one that would question their necessity, the effectiveness of our democracy, and be too hard to control through blatant media propaganda.

Yikes!

Okay, end rant, back to chillin' with beer and snus...

See, now you've all gone too far. Not because your posts wear politically charged, or even due to the fact that you're talking bad about the government.

It's manly because I have this horrible feeling that somewhere right now some government fat-cat is sitting in his big chair, smoking a cigar made of freshly minted cash, and he just got a few new ideas.

all kidding aside you guys should switch from beer to European Ale, it's way healthier, and it doesn't give you cancer... OK so maybe I had a little kidding left.

On a semi related note...... beware of carrots. Everyone who has eaten carrots have died, or will die at some point.

Great!! I hate carrots. Carrots are one of the only veggies I won't eat, because no matter how much you chew a piece of raw carrot, the pieces won't get "mushy", they just get smaller and smaller and harder and harder to swallow. It freaks me out

Side note: I don't eat corn either, I just scrape it off my plate directly into the toilet, saves a step and a couple hours.

Is it just me, or does anyone else find those damn stickers on some snus cans really annoying?

Now you're just trying to get even with me Rick, I nearly spit out my Thunder Berry when I read your corn comment!

I eat my corn, even though it's pointless, because if someone's going to the trouble to cook for me... but I draw the line at carrots, especially shredded carrots.

@mongoose - I considered the stickers a sorta necessary evil at first. But that was before things got hardcore with the war against tobacco, now they piss me off because they aren't based on any actual evidence, and there's no "even playing field" when it comes to warnings on addictive or potentially harmful products.

What really bugs me though is seeing the warnings on tobacco related products that aren't made of tobacco. I saw some rubber General Snus coasters, nice right. Would last a lot longer than my collection of cardboard beer coasters from pubs, have the nifty general logo. But is it really necessary for it to also say "This Product May Cause Mouth Cancer"? It's a rubber coaster!

So yeah, sick of the stickers. And since it doesn't seem likely they'll get rid of them or acknowledge that snus isn't harmful, I feel like I should sticker everything in an attempt to wake people up to how ridiculous it all is. Bombard it into meaninglessness...

"This food may cause you to become a Fat Ass"

"This Liquor make cause ugly people to appear doable"

"This electronic gadget may make you appear to be a pretentious asshole."

I guess you combine my righteous indignation at having my enjoyment of tobacco threatened, with a twisted sense of humor, and these are the ideas I come up with.

The one that really gets me is the "This Product May Cause Mouth Cancer" label on my fridgemate. Now, I may have a big mouth, but there ain't no way that thing is going to fit!

My wife almost spit out dinner last night when I pointed that little tidbit out to her

When I got my General hat & shirt, they both had the "warning" on them. I told my teenagers not to chew on my hat. Maybe someone had heard the old threat of ....."I'll eat my hat" and over thought it.

I'm so sick of warning labels. There is more than one gun company that stamps "Read instruction manual" on their guns. "Do not Iron clothes on body", my only thought most times is that some idiot tried it and sued so now they have to try to warn all the other idiots. If you are dumb enough to iron your clothes while wearing them, you don't need a warning label, you need a full time care provider.
