Whats with the 'Americanized Snus'?? 2 Years, 6 Months ago Karma: 0
I am very happy to see that snus as entered into the American market, but very disappointed with the choice to develop 2 new snus types that have do not even come close to the quality of genuine Swedish Snus. I am in Georgia, one of the test market states for Triumph and Camal, and I have to say I will never buy those products again. Maybe its because I used to Swedish snus, which I have been using since my college days in Orebro. Or maybe because it is too dry, has a horrible taste that drinking perfume, or leaves my gums extremely soar and my tongue very raw. I don't know what additives are in those brands, but they make the product not work.

Does anyone know of the possiblitiy of Swedish Match introducing genuine swedish snus brands like Grov, Ettan, Scruff, Nick & Johnny's, or any others to the US market?

Kevin, Welcome to the forum.
Triumph is actually made by Swedish Match, but flavored to be what someone thought Americans would like. It's OK, but the lack of nicotine is the deal breaker for me.

I won't even try to defend Camel SNUS.

Hi Kevin,

Presently you can find General in approx 500 stores on the US market (there's a store locator on generalsnus.com). I hope that you can find a store in your area. Our ambition is naturally to increase the availability of our products on the US market. Though you may also want to take a look at the many great online retailers that carry our entire brand portfolio.

Hello,

I am a newbie from the US here and joined recently because my favorite US snus, Triumph Mint is now officially been killed by Lorillard. My question is, what Swedish snus is comperable to the Triumph mint flavor and nicotine level? I am thinking about trying the General Mint large portions to see if they will fit my current void. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Interestingly enough I tried my closest cigar shop listed on the website only to find the only General product (or any snus product) was the sampler. That is not what I consider worthy of being listed on the site as a retailer. If they are part of the site they should be required to actually carry products!

Hi,

Our best bet on what you would find similar would be General mint as you mention. Hope they will make you happy. Please let us know what you think.

Best,

Joakim,
I feel the need to add that General Mint is a great new addition and I feel has a flavor well suited to the American market. Job well done...Ken

I'd like see General Chewing Tobacco, which I believe it's a long cut(like American Dip), I know it exists, available at the shops, as well as the General Tobacco Cuts made available to us.

I'd also like General to make a loose leaf, not sweet, or not heavy sweet, chewing tobacco, like Red Man in a bag/pouch.

There is an American Company in PA...not refering to North__er(another distributor) that has limited distribution for now for a few of the brands you mentioned but the choices are sparse.

Here's some food for thought for the people trying to get Swedish Snus, General in particular into your local "brick and mortar tobacconist".
1. Swedish Match Bought up General Cigar Co...ala "Punch"(Yum!)/Hoya de Monterrey"(Yum!) and many other hand rolled and machine mades such as White Owl(Yuck!) and Garcia Vega(Yuck!)
2. General Cigar Co. Owns Cigars International the largest Online Distributor of Cigars on the Internet in the US...located in Bath, PA.
3.Cigars International owns Get snus also located in Bath. I have heard Snus Central mention the posibility of having some cans with Get snus on them in the future.
Not sure why but I am Inquisitive.

With all that being said, as a longtime cigar smoker who buys from both Cigars International and my local "Brick and Mortar Tobacconist" to support the locals. The problem here lies in the fact that the many "Brick and Mortar tobacconists" secretly and sometimes openly do not like Cigars International because they can sell cigars for much cheaper than local "Brick and Mortar Tobacconists". Cigar International has done both good and bad for the cigar industry. They can give the best deals and exclusives which cannot be found in the local "Brick and Mortars" (Where many brands used to appear)because they cannot compete with the huge volume and no taxes for cigars moved from Cigars International in PA. Cigars International has entered into exclusive deals with many cigar brands to sell many of their cigars only at Cigars International. This does not sit well with local Brick and Mortars. Also many local tobacconists have pulled many brands such as Padilla & Ghurka which has turned to mass production instead of small factories in Miami of old, they have moved operations to Centarl America, namely Nicaragua, Dominican R., and Hondurous. They do this because with mass production in Central America as opposed to small batch production in Miami, they can produce millions of cigars(for CI)as opposed to hundreds of thousands of cigars(for Local stores)on the cheap. The biggest problem with this is that the quality of many cigars have gone downhill. The taste of many cigar brands which are now mass produced in Central America has suffered greatly. Many brands quality and craftmanship has gone downhill. Don't get me wrong my favorite cigars come from Central America, better than most Cubans(Yes I said it) I've smoked so many, but many top brands have suffered. The cigar looks the same but the flaver of the leaves are often not as good, so you have to be a cigar connaisseur to know which ones are the best. Here's a tip, my favorite blenders are Nestor Plascencia Jr. and Don Pepin Garcia. I do not know how this will affect "Swedish Snus", in essence it might be a good thing for snus.
So there is a conundrum here Swedish Match distributes General Cigar and Swedish Match Snus Brands in America but the local Tobacconists are angry at Cigar International for cornering the market. With no taxes on cigars added with PACT, CI(in PA with no tax on tobacco) will still do very well. While many local Tobacconists are having a hard time staying afloat. I know this is a lot to digest but getting Swedish Match into loacal stores will not be easy at first. As the company grows SM will in time begin to do well at places like gas stations but may have a problem getting products in local tobacconists. It's also interesting that if you go to the Swedish Match website for their store locator most of the stores said to carry the General Brand in MASS, do not carry General anymore because it did not sell. SM at this point has not updated their website for stores carrying their products in a while. I hope this will change...but for now I will continue to buy from SnusCentral.
So any input from distributors on this problem of conflict of interest, there is a lot I don't know about this situation as well as some things I suspect but am not solid on details. This all could be very good for Swedish Match in the long run...as you can see I'm confused. It seems as if everyone owns each other.
