TOPIC: Long term snus storage
#22294
Long term snus storage 1 Year, 6 Months ago Karma: 0
I have a stockpile of snus (around 50 rolls)that I purchased pre-PACT. As my orders arrived I would vacuum pack it (I have a commercial type machine)and freeze it. My understanding is that snus can be stored this way for 12+ months, right? My question is; besides using snus I am also a cigar smoker. I have a fairly large humidor which could hold my thirtysome boxes of cigars and most if not all of my snus. Knowing that refrigeration is a very effective dehumidifier and causes snus to lose it's moisture, would there be any benefit to storing snus in my humidor? Temperature is maintained at 70 degrees F and humidity is maintained at a constant 70% RH. This would very affectively keep the snus from drying out. Since Swedish snus is pastuerized I wouldn't think that bacteria would be a problem. What am I overlooking?

I would say you are overlooking the idea that the freezer is freezing in the moisture. I have had frozen snus that was 18 months past it's best by date and it was a little dry, but not dry enough that I needed to add water. I have had snus in my fridge dry out within a couple months past the date.

This is merely my experience and non scientist brain working, so I may be totally off base.

I am no expert but drying out is not the only issue involved with storing snus. One of the reasons snus is healthier for you than many alternatives is because the TSNA (carcinogenic levels) are much lower. This is obtained by steam treating the tobacco instead of using an open flame. Though the TSNA levels are very low in Snus, like most products over time those levels increase. This is why it's good advice to freeze snus for long storage since it puts a halt to the degradation of the nicotine while also stopping the TSNA levels for increasing. Storing snus in a humidor would keep it moist but wouldn't protect against the TSNA levels increasing.

Like I said I am not expert but I assume from all that I have read that this is why snus is refrigerated, and why it should be frozen if it is to be stored for a long period of time.
